The Chapel of ‘Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Beukenboom’ in Ninove is being repurposed as a residence. The building, constructed in the 17th century at the intersection of three country roads, consists of three bays with a semicircular choir.
The exterior shell is being carefully restored. The stained-glass windows are being replaced with a combination of colored and clear glass, allowing daylight to flood in once again. The floor is being insulated and finished with the original tiles.
A light, demountable steel structure will be placed against the eastern wall, making the spacious chapel suitable for habitation. Two profiled steel intermediate floors protrude above a portico structure on the central axis of the chapel. In between, rooms will be furnished as wooden volumes. The construction is cut through by the semicircular choir, the existing front door, and a slender spiral staircase connecting the floors.
A new doorway in the choir breaks through the closed character of the chapel and offers a wide view of the fields behind it.
