The site is located at a traffic intersection with two layers: the junction of motorways on the one hand, and the junction of the old Scheldt and the Ring Canal on the other. The development of the site is part of the master plan for Eiland Zwijnaarde Noord drawn up by GAFPA.
The site will be set up to process aggregates from demolition materials and produce concrete, with a new office building for operations. A new unloading quay will be constructed to supply granules in bulk by water. The site, formed by the curve of the water and the R4 motorway, will have granulate storage boxes along this organic perimeter, made of stacked concrete blocks. Central within this perimeter is the mixing plant, with a loop road to supply the granulate boxes and the mixing plant. The water needs of the entire site are met by a large buffer basin under the central courtyard, with its own treatment plant. The concrete plant itself consists of a cluster of vertical silos, whose typology serves as inspiration for the design of an office volume at the head of the site.
The plan of the office building is based on a modular grid of nine squares shifted in response to the curved bank. These squares are inscribed in interlocking circles, wrapped by a metal filter that evokes the image of composite silos. The concrete terraces, which define the circumference of the circles, cantilever out from the square and provide solar shading and protection against fire spread between floors.
