A former carpentry is hidden from view by a stately townhouse on the street side. On ground floor, the house is laid out with an original carriage entrance flanked by a front and back room. At the rear of the lot is the carpentry, constructed as a central space with two side aisles. The project transforms the whole into a residence with painting studio, preserving both the mansion and the carpentry in their original character with minimal interventions.

A new addition forms the spatial link between the two buildings and acts as the heart of the project. The concept of the carriage entrance is resurrected and rotated around a symmetrical center axis. The roof consists of a reflection of two curved roof shields that engage a central beam and connect it to the surrounding high garden walls. Two cutouts create a patio and a shell-shaped skylight. The monumental height and geometry creates a unique light and allows views into the hidden painting studio.
